Why Berwick roof cavities overheat

Berwick's newer estate homes, many built from the 1990s onward, often have larger roof spans than older housing stock, and on a hot day the ceiling cavity beneath that tile or Colorbond roof traps heat that radiates back down into living areas overnight. A whirlybird uses wind movement and the natural rise of hot air to keep pulling that warm, moist air out continuously, with no power needed. On tile roofs we lift the course, cut a clean penetration and bed the flashing so it stays watertight through Berwick's wetter-than-average winters; on Colorbond we match the fixing to the roof sheet profile.

Berwick's larger, newer estate roofs often have more ceiling cavity to ventilate than an older, smaller home, and the area's higher rainfall makes a properly flashed, leak-free installation especially important.

The process

How we install a whirlybird

1

Assess the cavity

We look at roof size, pitch and existing airflow to work out how many vents you actually need — no over-selling.

2

Position for airflow

Vents go high on the roof where the hottest air collects, balanced with the eave intake so air can actually move through.

3

Cut & flash

On a tiled roof we lift the tiles, cut a neat penetration, and bed the flashing so it is fully weatherproof.

4

Seat & seal

The turbine is seated in the flashing collar and the tiles are reinstated over the apron, leaving a clean, leak-free finish.

Roof types in Berwick

Installation differs by roof: on tiled roofs we cut and flash the penetration under the tile course, while on metal roofs the vent is flashed directly into the sheeting. Both need the flashing done properly — a rushed vent install is a classic future leak.

Our standard

Installations are carried out by an insured team and the workmanship is backed by a 7-Year Workmanship Guarantee and a 10-Year Dulux Acratex Material Warranty.

Berwick whirlybird installation — your questions

It depends on the roof area, but many of Berwick's larger estate homes need three or more turbines to properly ventilate the ceiling cavity. We measure the actual roof size and pitch before recommending a number rather than guessing.
Not if it's flashed properly, which is the whole point of doing it right. We bed and seal the flashing under the tile course or against the Colorbond profile, so the roof stays watertight even through Berwick's wetter winter months.
They still help even in low wind, because rising hot air alone will turn the turbine and draw air out of the cavity. Wind simply speeds up the airflow, so on still, hot days the whirlybird keeps working, just a little more slowly.
