Why Camberwell roof cavities overheat

Camberwell's period homes often have large, timber-framed roof cavities that hold heat well into the evening and trap damp air in winter — and little in the way of ventilation as built. Whirlybirds fix that, but on a heritage streetscape placement matters: we position the turbines discreetly, out of the main street view where we can, and on the terracotta and slate roofs common here we flash them in carefully so the install is both weatherproof and sympathetic to the roof. Venting the cavity eases the summer heat that radiates into the rooms below, and in Camberwell's leafy, damp setting it also clears the winter moisture that would otherwise condense in the roof and feed mould in those old timbers.

On Camberwell's heritage roofs, ventilation has to be done sympathetically — discreet turbine placement and careful flashing on terracotta or slate — so the roof breathes without spoiling the look of a period home.

The process

How we install a whirlybird

1

Assess the cavity

We look at roof size, pitch and existing airflow to work out how many vents you actually need — no over-selling.

2

Position for airflow

Vents go high on the roof where the hottest air collects, balanced with the eave intake so air can actually move through.

3

Cut & flash

On a tiled roof we lift the tiles, cut a neat penetration, and bed the flashing so it is fully weatherproof.

4

Seat & seal

The turbine is seated in the flashing collar and the tiles are reinstated over the apron, leaving a clean, leak-free finish.

Roof types in Camberwell

Installation differs by roof: on tiled roofs we cut and flash the penetration under the tile course, while on metal roofs the vent is flashed directly into the sheeting. Both need the flashing done properly — a rushed vent install is a classic future leak.

Our standard

Installations are carried out by an insured team and the workmanship is backed by a 7-Year Workmanship Guarantee and a 10-Year Dulux Acratex Material Warranty.

Camberwell whirlybird installation — your questions

Yes. On Camberwell's period homes we place the turbines where they are least visible from the street and flash them carefully into the terracotta or slate, so the roof is ventilated without spoiling its character.
They do. Camberwell's large period roof cavities hold heat and, in winter, damp air. Venting that out eases summer heat in the rooms below and protects the old timbers from condensation and mould.
Yes, carefully. Slate and aged terracotta need considered flashing so the install stays weatherproof without cracking tiles. It is the sort of careful work these period roofs demand.
Not when flashed properly, which is where rushed installs fail. On Camberwell's heritage roofs we take extra care with the flashing so the vent is fully weatherproof and sympathetic to the roof.
