Why Clayton roof cavities overheat

Clayton's post-war brick veneer homes were built well before roof ventilation was standard, so the cavity above the ceiling traps heat on warm days and pushes it down into the rooms below. A whirlybird continuously exhausts that hot, still air using nothing but wind movement, taking real load off the roof space in summer. On the concrete and terracotta tile roofs common here we lift the tile course, cut a clean penetration, bed the flashing watertight and seat the turbine. Near Monash University, newer townhouse roofs are typically smaller, so fewer turbines are usually needed than on the larger older blocks nearby.

Clayton's post-war homes were built without roof ventilation in mind, so summer heat builds up in the roof cavity above the ceiling — a whirlybird clears it continuously without power.

The process

How we install a whirlybird

1

Assess the cavity

We look at roof size, pitch and existing airflow to work out how many vents you actually need — no over-selling.

2

Position for airflow

Vents go high on the roof where the hottest air collects, balanced with the eave intake so air can actually move through.

3

Cut & flash

On a tiled roof we lift the tiles, cut a neat penetration, and bed the flashing so it is fully weatherproof.

4

Seat & seal

The turbine is seated in the flashing collar and the tiles are reinstated over the apron, leaving a clean, leak-free finish.

Roof types in Clayton

Installation differs by roof: on tiled roofs we cut and flash the penetration under the tile course, while on metal roofs the vent is flashed directly into the sheeting. Both need the flashing done properly — a rushed vent install is a classic future leak.

Our standard

Installations are carried out by an insured team and the workmanship is backed by a 7-Year Workmanship Guarantee and a 10-Year Dulux Acratex Material Warranty.

Clayton whirlybird installation — your questions

Most single-storey post-war homes here need one or two turbines, while larger roofs or homes with a more complex roofline may need more. We size the number to the actual roof area rather than a standard figure.
Yes — homes built before roof ventilation was standard practice tend to trap the most heat in the cavity, so a whirlybird continuously clearing that hot air makes a noticeable difference to comfort in summer.
Yes. Newer townhouse roofs are usually smaller and simpler, so installation is straightforward, and we size the turbine count to the smaller roof area rather than over-specifying it.
