Why Dandenong roof cavities overheat

A large share of Dandenong's housing stock was built well before roof ventilation was standard, particularly the older weatherboard and brick homes near the centre, leaving roof cavities that trap summer heat and push it straight down into the ceiling below. On the more shaded, established streets, trapped moisture after rain is also a factor in ageing roof timbers. A whirlybird uses wind and rising heat to draw that hot, humid air out continuously, easing both the heat load in summer and moisture build-up through wetter months. We fit the turbine into the tile or colorbond roofline with properly sealed flashing, sizing the number installed to the actual roof area rather than a standard fitting.

Dandenong's mix of older, established homes near the centre and more open newer infill means both heat load and trapped roof moisture are real considerations here, depending on the street's tree cover and housing age.

The process

How we install a whirlybird

1

Assess the cavity

We look at roof size, pitch and existing airflow to work out how many vents you actually need — no over-selling.

2

Position for airflow

Vents go high on the roof where the hottest air collects, balanced with the eave intake so air can actually move through.

3

Cut & flash

On a tiled roof we lift the tiles, cut a neat penetration, and bed the flashing so it is fully weatherproof.

4

Seat & seal

The turbine is seated in the flashing collar and the tiles are reinstated over the apron, leaving a clean, leak-free finish.

Roof types in Dandenong

Installation differs by roof: on tiled roofs we cut and flash the penetration under the tile course, while on metal roofs the vent is flashed directly into the sheeting. Both need the flashing done properly — a rushed vent install is a classic future leak.

Dandenong whirlybird installation — your questions

Yes — on homes built before ventilation standards existed, the roof cavity traps summer heat and pushes it into the ceiling below. Continuous ventilation draws that heat out before it builds up.
It does. On the suburb's more shaded, established streets, trapped humid air after rain can encourage timber rot over time, and a whirlybird continuously clears that moisture along with the heat.
It depends on the roof size and layout — most standard homes need one to two, but we assess the actual roof area rather than fitting a fixed number to every house.
