Whirlybird Installation · Fairfield
Fairfield's period cottages often have compact, timber-framed roof cavities with little original ventilation, so heat builds up quickly in summer and stays trapped into the evening. Whirlybirds vent that air out. On a heritage streetscape, placement matters — we position the turbines discreetly where we can, and on the terracotta roofs common here we flash them in carefully so the install is weatherproof and sympathetic to the cottage below. Venting the cavity eases the summer heat radiating into the rooms, and in winter it clears the moisture that would otherwise condense in the roof and feed mould in the old timbers.
On Fairfield's period cottages, ventilation has to be done sympathetically — discreet placement and careful flashing on terracotta — so the roof breathes without spoiling the streetscape.
Local roof weather
Fairfield sees around ~6 days above 35°C a year, and on those days an unventilated roof cavity turns into a heat store right above your ceilings.

The process
We look at roof size, pitch and existing airflow to work out how many vents you actually need — no over-selling.
Vents go high on the roof where the hottest air collects, balanced with the eave intake so air can actually move through.
On a tiled roof we lift the tiles, cut a neat penetration, and bed the flashing so it is fully weatherproof.
The turbine is seated in the flashing collar and the tiles are reinstated over the apron, leaving a clean, leak-free finish.
Installation differs by roof: on tiled roofs we cut and flash the penetration under the tile course, while on metal roofs the vent is flashed directly into the sheeting. Both need the flashing done properly — a rushed vent install is a classic future leak.
Installations are carried out by an insured team and the workmanship is backed by a 7-Year Workmanship Guarantee and a 10-Year Dulux Acratex Material Warranty.
