Whirlybird Installation · Glen Iris
Glen Iris's Victorian, Edwardian and California bungalow homes were built long before roof ventilation was standard practice, so the ceiling cavity beneath the original terracotta or slate traps heat in summer and moisture through the cooler, shaded months created by the suburb's heavy tree canopy. A whirlybird continuously draws that trapped air out using wind and rising heat, no electricity required. Fitting one to a period roof means carefully lifting the tile course, cutting a clean penetration and bedding the flashing so it's fully watertight, taking extra care with older, more brittle terracotta and slate.
Glen Iris's pre-ventilation-era period homes trap both summer heat and shaded, canopy-driven moisture in the roof cavity, so a whirlybird helps on both fronts, provided the installation handles the older terracotta or slate properly.
Local roof weather
Glen Iris sees around ~5 days above 35°C a year, and on those days an unventilated roof cavity turns into a heat store right above your ceilings.

The process
We look at roof size, pitch and existing airflow to work out how many vents you actually need — no over-selling.
Vents go high on the roof where the hottest air collects, balanced with the eave intake so air can actually move through.
On a tiled roof we lift the tiles, cut a neat penetration, and bed the flashing so it is fully weatherproof.
The turbine is seated in the flashing collar and the tiles are reinstated over the apron, leaving a clean, leak-free finish.
Installation differs by roof: on tiled roofs we cut and flash the penetration under the tile course, while on metal roofs the vent is flashed directly into the sheeting. Both need the flashing done properly — a rushed vent install is a classic future leak.
Installations are carried out by an insured team and the workmanship is backed by a 7-Year Workmanship Guarantee and a 10-Year Dulux Acratex Material Warranty.
