Why Hampton roof cavities overheat

Hampton's Edwardian and Californian bungalow homes were mostly built well before modern ventilation standards, leaving roof cavities that trap both summer heat and, given the suburb's coastal humidity, damp air for longer than they should. A whirlybird uses wind off the bay and rising cavity heat to continuously draw that air out, easing the heat load pushing down into rooms on hot days and clearing moisture that would otherwise sit in the roof space. In Hampton's case the sea breeze that's fairly constant near the coast actually helps a whirlybird turn more consistently than in a sheltered inland suburb, so ventilation tends to be genuinely effective here.

Hampton's steady coastal breeze helps a whirlybird spin consistently, and with humidity off the bay adding to trapped roof moisture, venting the cavity matters here for both summer heat and damp control.

Hampton sees around ~6 days above 35°C a year, and on those days an unventilated roof cavity turns into a heat store right above your ceilings.

The process

How we install a whirlybird

1

Assess the cavity

We look at roof size, pitch and existing airflow to work out how many vents you actually need — no over-selling.

2

Position for airflow

Vents go high on the roof where the hottest air collects, balanced with the eave intake so air can actually move through.

3

Cut & flash

On a tiled roof we lift the tiles, cut a neat penetration, and bed the flashing so it is fully weatherproof.

4

Seat & seal

The turbine is seated in the flashing collar and the tiles are reinstated over the apron, leaving a clean, leak-free finish.

Roof types in Hampton

Installation differs by roof: on tiled roofs we cut and flash the penetration under the tile course, while on metal roofs the vent is flashed directly into the sheeting. Both need the flashing done properly — a rushed vent install is a classic future leak.

Our standard

Installations are carried out by an insured team and the workmanship is backed by a 7-Year Workmanship Guarantee and a 10-Year Dulux Acratex Material Warranty.

Hampton whirlybird installation — your questions

It generally helps. A whirlybird relies on wind to turn and draw air out, and Hampton's fairly consistent coastal breeze keeps the turbine moving more often than in a sheltered inland suburb, which improves ventilation.
Yes. Coastal humidity adds to the moisture that can sit in an older, poorly ventilated roof cavity, and a whirlybird continuously vents that damp air out, reducing the risk of condensation and timber decay.
Yes, we flash every turbine to suit the specific tile profile, whether that's original terracotta or later concrete tile, so the install stays fully weatherproof on Hampton's period roofs.
