Hepburn's goldfields-era cottages were built long before roof ventilation was standard, and their compact roof cavities trap heat in summer while holding onto moisture through the damp, shaded months under the surrounding forest canopy. A whirlybird uses wind and rising heat to continuously draw that trapped air out, easing the load on the rooms below in summer and, just as importantly here, reducing the condensation that builds up in a roof cavity kept damp by heavy shade and higher regional rainfall. On tile roofs we flash the turbine in under the tile course; on older corrugated metal roofing it's fitted directly into the sheeting, in both cases keeping the install fully weatherproof.

On a tiled roof we lift the tiles, cut a neat penetration, and bed the flashing so it is fully weatherproof.

Seat & seal
The turbine is seated in the flashing collar and the tiles are reinstated over the apron, leaving a clean, leak-free finish.
